Hastily fixed restroom plates that look identical from one establishment to another are a thing of the past. Restroom signage deserves the same attention as the rest of your visual identity. At YouCarve, it has become one of our specialties: a vast library of pictograms, a wide range of materials, fully customizable dimensions, and 100% French manufacturing in Isère. From geometric minimalism to the most unexpected silhouettes, here is how to choose restroom signage that reflects your image.
Restroom signage, that detail we underestimate
You have carefully worked on the visual identity of your establishment, your logo, your colors, you have carefully chosen your furniture, your lighting... And then, on the restroom door, a dull plastic plate with stiff silhouettes, bought from a wholesaler, identical to the one in the establishment next door.
An austere plate, like we would like to see less often...
For decades, restroom signage was treated as a consumable, with just the bare minimum to signal a function. Today, it is reinventing itself thanks to a wide variety of available shapes and materials. Restroom signage is becoming what it should have been long ago: a true decorative object. For an establishment receiving the public, a restaurant, a hotel, or a boutique, it is the opportunity for a detail that extends the universe of the place rather than breaking it.
Restroom signage is an element of your visual identity just like your sign or your menu. A standard restroom plate sends a message that says “we did not think about it”. On the contrary, signage that is thought out and coherent with the place, whether it is warm, elegant, funny, or minimalist, asserts your high standards down to the smallest detail. And at a time when every corner of an establishment is destined to end up on social media, a restroom pictogram with character becomes a discreet form of communication.
Who is well-crafted restroom signage for?
Restaurants, bars, and cafés
A warm wooden cutout for a bistro, vintage pictograms for a 1930s hotel bar, quirky silhouettes for a restaurant with a strong identity: the restroom pictogram can extend your universe right to the end of the customer journey.
Hotels and accommodations
Guest houses, charming cottages, hotels: your customers come to live an experience, not just to spend the night. Restroom signage in harmony with your visual identity (e.g., noble wood for a Provencal mas, brushed aluminum for an urban design hotel) will reinforce the feeling of a place thought out down to its smallest details.
Offices, coworking, and professional practices
Sobriety can have style. Minimalist pictograms in brushed aluminum or matte PMMA assert a corporate identity without falling into the mundane. For lawyers, architects, communication agencies, or premium coworking spaces, it is the kind of detail that immediately shows a place has been thought out through and through.
Gyms, well-being, and play areas
Leisure and well-being spaces often have a strong identity: colors, typographies, assumed atmosphere. Restroom signage aligned with this identity (marked typography for a boxing gym, sleek pictogram for a yoga studio) reinforces the universe of the place and avoids style disruptions that break the general harmony.
And at your home?
A pretty personalized wooden restroom icon in a family home, a novelty pictogram in the children's bathroom, an elegant typographic signage in a renovated apartment: it is a decorative object in its own right, and a detail that your guests will not see anywhere else.
Which style to choose?

The minimalist style
Based on simple geometric shapes: circles, triangles, squares, this type of design reduces silhouettes to the essential to keep only the meaning. This sleek style is favored by contemporary offices, coworking spaces, design boutiques, and architectural firms. It expresses itself particularly well in brushed aluminum, matte black PMMA, or light wood to soften the line.
The classic style revisited
Traditional men/women silhouettes, but reworked: modernized proportions, refined lines, more natural postures. This is the family of safe bets, the one that fits everywhere, from family restaurants to institutional establishments, without ever betraying the place. The originality of this type of signage can then come from the relief of the material or from the dimensions.
The vintage/retro style
Art-deco silhouettes, or early 1900s: this style immediately sets an old-fashioned elegance and an assumed retro atmosphere. It is mostly found in traditional bistros, old cafés, cocktail bars, and other restaurants with a worked and vintage identity. It flourishes in patinated wood, copper effect, or mirror-effect PMMA.
The novelty or illustrative style
Superheroes, cowboys, themed characters… We are in a lighter and more playful family of pictograms: men and women pirates for a seaside crêperie, children's faces for a school or a nursery...
The humorous style
Characters who urgently need to go, others with their eyes glued to their smartphone in the toilet… Here, the signage deliberately looks for a smile. It works particularly well in casual places, bars, and all establishments that embrace a light tone down to the details.
The typographic style
Here there is no pictogram, only words: “Restrooms”, “Men / Women”, “Gents / Ladies”. This family appeals to lettering lovers, bars with a literary atmosphere, and establishments with a strong typographic identity.
Choosing your material: the effect changes everything

The exact same pictogram can give a very different rendering depending on the material it is cut from. The texture, the relief, the thickness, but also the lighting and the surrounding elements will significantly influence the final perception.
The relief
Thickness adds depth to the signage, whereas a simple vinyl sticker will remain completely flat. The greater the thickness, the more pronounced the relief will be. Conversely, a small thickness will give a more discreet look, with less present shadows. You must therefore take lighting into account: a single light coming from the ceiling will generate sharp and pronounced shadows, while a more diffused lighting, coming from several sources, will soften this effect a lot. Unless you deliberately want to play the card of an exaggerated relief, you will generally choose a thickness proportional to the size of the pictogram: large signage can support more relief, while a small pictogram will often require more subtlety with a low thickness.
The texture and the shade
Each material conveys an atmosphere:
- Woods are warm, welcoming, and elegant. Oak evokes nobility, larch a mountain atmosphere, and bamboo a zen side. The shades, from walnut to maple, adjust the contrast with the support.
- Expanded PVCs bring sobriety and softness
- Matte PMMAs create a cozy and calm atmosphere
- Glossy PMMAs are bright and sophisticated
- Brushed aluminum Dibonds are resolutely contemporary, with an industrial touch
Furthermore, the choice of material is preferably made in relation to the support and the decor. Contrast is the most common approach. On a textured wall (wood, stone, wallpaper), a pictogram in neutral PMMA or PVC will stand out immediately. Conversely, on a uniform support, a textured material will bring the richness that was missing. You can also seek to echo other elements of the decor: an oak pictogram to match oak furniture, brushed gold aluminum to extend golden frames...

What dimensions to choose for signage pictograms?
Dimensions strongly influence the perception of a pictogram: they are as much about legibility as they are about aesthetic balance.
Discreet format: 10 to 15 cm in height
Ideal for private restrooms, small spaces, or intimate guest houses. The signage is then noticed for its quality, not its size.
Standard format: 15 to 25 cm in height
This is the comfort zone for restaurants, bars, offices, and boutiques. These dimensions offer excellent legibility from a few meters away, with a balanced visual presence.
Demonstrative format: 25 to 50 cm and more
For establishments with a strong personality or an asserted character, the signage is no longer just functional, it becomes a centerpiece of the decor. In projects with the most audacious or deliberately exuberant designs, giant pictograms can be over 1 meter high!

Frequently Asked Questions
At what height should a restroom pictogram be installed?
The recommended height corresponds to the average eye level, which is between 1.50 m and 1.60 m from the ground.
On what surfaces can the signage be installed?
On most flat and relatively smooth surfaces: painted door, varnished wood, metal, PVC, glass, tiles… Make sure, if necessary, to clean and degrease the surface before installation.
Does the provided double-sided adhesive last over time?
Yes. We provide a high-performance adhesive, designed for permanent hold on clean and non-greasy surfaces, and resistant to common variations in temperature and humidity.
Can a pictogram be customized with a custom logo or an original drawing?
Yes, but not directly from our configurator. If you have designed your own signage pictograms, you can submit your file (preferably vector format) and get your custom price via our custom cutting service based on a provided file.
How long will it take to receive my order?
Our products are custom-made and made to order. Allow an average of 5 to 10 business days depending on the chosen material and finish, shipping included, in metropolitan France.
